Five lines call at Otemachi, more than at any other station on the Tokyo subway, and they arrived one at a time across thirty-three years. The Marunouchi Line came first, on 20 July 1956, beneath what is now the Tokyo Sankei Building, which is why Marunouchi announcements still add the subtitle Sankei-mae. The Tozai Line opened on 1 October 1966 as a terminus and gained through tracks the following year; the Chiyoda Line arrived on 20 December 1969, the Mita Line on 30 June 1972 and the Hanzomon Line on 26 January 1989.

Fit the five together and the plan resembles the letter P. Depths vary as much as dates: the Marunouchi platforms lie 10.2 m down, the Mita Line 12.9 m, the Chiyoda Line 14.1 m, the Tozai Line 18.4 m and the Hanzomon Line 27.1 m. Tokyo Metro’s four lines share one set of gates; Toei’s Mita Line, I09, is a second company’s station inside the same complex. The 2025 Tokyo Metro survey counted 350,993 passengers a day.

Finding Otemachi on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Otemachi

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Departure times come from the operators’ own GTFS timetables (ODPT GTFS Toei-Train-GTFS (version 20261009, valid 2026-03-14..2027-03-12) + TokyoMetro-Train-GTFS (version 20261008, valid 2026-09-19..2027-03-12)). Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Transfers and connections

  • Subway: transfer between Marunouchi Line, Tozai Line, Chiyoda Line, Hanzomon Line, and Mita Line. The Tokyo Metro lines and the Toei Subway lines belong to different companies, so a trip that uses both costs more than one operator alone — see fares.
  • JR: Tokaido-Shinkansen (JR Central), Akita-Shinkansen (JR East), Chuo Rapid Line (JR East), Hokuriku-Shinkansen (JR East), Joban Rapid Line (JR East), Joetsu-Shinkansen (JR East), Keihin-Tohoku-Negishi Line (JR East), Keiyo Line (JR East), Sobu Rapid Line (JR East), Takasaki Line (JR East), Tohoku-Shinkansen (JR East), Tokaido Line (JR East), Utsunomiya Line (JR East), Yamagata-Shinkansen (JR East), Yamanote Line (JR East), Yokosuka Line (JR East). These are separate railways with their own fares.

Frequently asked questions

The Tozai Line platforms sit apart from the rest. Inside the gates there is no direct link to the Marunouchi or Hanzomon platforms, and the route runs via the Chiyoda Line platform. Outside the gates, any one of the Tokyo Metro lines here connects with the other three.

Yes. Several underground passages join the two, as well as the street above. The Tozai Line platforms are the closest of the five, and theirs is the only route that is signed for Tokyo Station, so the walk from the other platforms takes longer than the map suggests.

Otemachi Station is served by the Marunouchi Line, Tozai Line, Chiyoda Line, Hanzomon Line, and Mita Line. Its station numbers are M18, T09, C11, Z08, I09 — one per line, and that is what the platform signs, the maps and the announcements use.
No. Otemachi is served by both Tokyo Metro and Toei, which are separate companies with separate fares. If your trip uses one line from each, you pay both fares minus the ¥70 connecting discount. Transfer through the marked transfer gates so the discount is applied. How the two-operator fare works.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Otemachi is around 05:07 and the latest around 00:29, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Tokyo Metro: the “1-route” (step-free street-gate-platform path by elevator, slope, stair lift or wheelchair escalator) is complete at all 180 stations; a separate list shows stations with an elevator-only 1-route. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Otemachi to Shinjuku on Tokyo Metro lines is ¥209 with an IC card (¥210 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
