Kasai carries a second name on its signs: Chikatetsu Hakubutsukan-mae, in front of the Subway Museum. The museum opened under the viaduct on 12 July 1986, and from 1 August 1993 it got its own ticket gate at one end of platform 2, which shuts after 23:00. The station itself opened on 29 March 1969 as T17, elevated, with two side platforms set outside a pair of central tracks that rapid trains use to overtake – during the middle of the day every rapid on the Tozai Line passes a local here.

The other thing Kasai is known for is underground and has nothing to do with trains: the automated bicycle park completed in April 2008, which stores about 9,400 bicycles in a basement 15 m deep and returns one in roughly 23 seconds, each of its lifts handling 180 to 190 machines. Solar panels went up in 2013 and platform doors came into use on 4 December 2021. With 100,966 entries and exits a day in the 2025 survey, this is the most heavily used of the stations that rapid trains skip between Toyocho and Nishi-funabashi.

Finding Kasai on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Kasai

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.
