T14 opened on 14 September 1967 as the eastern end of the Tozai Line and kept that role for a year and a half, until the extension to Nishi-funabashi on 29 March 1969. Rapid trains began the same day, running non-stop from Toyocho out to Nishi-funabashi. The station has two side platforms with a row of centre pillars, and the approach tracks to the Fukagawa depot leave the line beside it, which is why a number of trains begin and end their runs here.

Rebuilding started in December 1998 and finished in August 2004, widening parts of the platforms from 3.5 m to 7.25 m and fitting escalators; a second ticket hall and exit 5 were added on the Nishi-funabashi-bound side on 31 March 2016, built into the grounds of the Fukagawa Post Office, and platform doors came into use on 30 January 2021. Toyocho lies in a zero-metre district, below the level of a high tide, so its entrances and passages are fitted with flood doors. In 2025 the station was used by 116,365 people on an average day, more than any other station on the Tozai Line apart from Nakano.

Finding Toyocho on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Toyocho

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Because the access tracks to the Fukagawa depot join the line at this station. Trains coming out of the depot in the morning and going back in later can start or end here rather than run the whole line, and the timetable is built around that.

Toyocho is in a zero-metre area, ground that lies below the level of a high tide, so the station is fitted with watertight doors at its entrances and inside its passages as a defence against storm surge and flooding.

Only the Tozai Line stops at Toyocho Station. Its station number is T14.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Toyocho is around 04:58 and the latest around 00:23, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.

Tokyo Metro: the “1-route” (step-free street-gate-platform path by elevator, slope, stair lift or wheelchair escalator) is complete at all 180 stations; a separate list shows stations with an elevator-only 1-route.
