Ichinoe opened on 14 September 1986, filling in a gap on the eastern half of the Shinjuku Line as Edogawa was being built up, and it has a single island platform underground at the crossing of Imai-kaido and the Kannana ring road. S18 is a commuter station in the plainest sense – apartment blocks immediately around it, houses beyond, the Shin-Naka river a short way off – and the numbers reflect it: 43,043 entries and exits on an average day in 2024, well ahead of several stations in busier surroundings.

What sets it apart is the road interchange on top. Ten bus stands at the station forecourt feed routes across eastern Tokyo toward Kasai, Koiwa, Kameido and Shin-koiwa, and coaches to both airports and to the Disney resort call at the same place, which makes this an unusually useful station for travellers staying out this way; airport access covers the rail alternatives. Trains from the platform run through onto the Keio network at the far end of the line.

Finding Ichinoe on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Ichinoe

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Because the station sits where two main roads cross, the Kannana ring road and Imai-kaido, in a part of Edogawa the railway reaches only along one line. Ten stands at the forecourt distribute Toei and Keisei routes across the east of the city, and long-distance coaches use the same interchange.
On 14 September 1986, later than most of the Shinjuku Line, as the eastern section was extended through Edogawa. The station was built as a single island platform below the road junction, with four entrances, and the housing around it largely dates from the same period of growth.
Only the Shinjuku Line stops at Ichinoe Station. Its station number is S18.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Ichinoe is around 05:08 and the latest around 00:20, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Ichinoe to Shinjuku on Toei Subway lines is ¥325 with an IC card (¥330 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
