Funabori belongs to the eastern half of the Shinjuku Line, the part Toei built out through Edogawa in the early 1980s, and it opened on 23 December 1983 as S17. The platforms are a plain pair of side platforms with a track between them, set just off the Funabori-kaido. Trains from here run west through the city and on beyond the subway onto the Keio network, which makes the station a long but direct ride from the suburbs on the far side of Tokyo.

The building above the station is the local landmark rather than the station itself: Tower Hall Funabori, Edogawa’s citizens’ hall, stands at the exits with an observation tower open to the public. The 2024 Toei survey counted 58,409 entries and exits on an average day, a respectable figure for a station whose surroundings are a mix of apartment blocks, offices and light industry rather than a destination.

Finding Funabori on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.
