Hamacho sits under Hamacho Park, and getting a ten-car platform into that space took some ingenuity. The open-cut section beneath the park gave only 157.5 m of the 210 m needed, so engineers drove two single-track shield tunnels through and then opened out the ground between them over a length of 62.5 m, jacking steel pipes horizontally above the gap to hold the earth while they dug – a spectacle-shaped station, as the technique is called in Japanese. Twenty buildings overhead had to be underpinned or have their ground chemically stabilized first. While that work was going on in 1976, a Naumann elephant fossil turned up nearby and was catalogued as the Hamacho specimen.

The station opened on 21 December 1978 as S10, with its island platform on a curve of 510 m radius three levels down and the ticket gates on the first basement. It is the quietest stop on the Shinjuku Line: 21,447 entries and exits a day in 2024, less than half the figure at Bakuro-yokoyama or Morishita on either side, both of which are express stops. Its unofficial second name, Meijiza-mae, survives in the on-board announcements.

Finding Hamacho on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Hamacho

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Frequently asked questions

By joining two tunnels. Only 157.5 m of the station could be dug from the surface under Hamacho Park, short of the 210 m a ten-car train needs, so two parallel shield tunnels were bored and the ground between them opened out over 62.5 m, supported by steel pipes driven horizontally overhead.
A Naumann elephant fossil, uncovered near the site in 1976 and recorded as the Hamacho specimen. The find came during works that also required twenty buildings above the route to be underpinned or have the ground beneath them strengthened before tunnelling could pass underneath.
