The platform here carries a line painted across it. Shin-egota straddles the boundary between Nakano and Nerima, the division is marked where passengers can see it, and the concourse holds newsletter racks for both wards. It is the northernmost station in Nakano, and the name sets a trap for readers of Japanese: this is Shin-egota, while Seibu’s station written with the same characters is read Ekoda.

E34 opened on 19 December 1997 as a station of Toei Line 12, which became the Oedo Line in April 2000, and lies 5.4 km from the end of the line at Hikarigaoka. Its single island platform is the remains of a plan that was abandoned: the Oedo Line was first designed for 20 m cars in ten-car trains with express services, and this station was to have two side platforms with a centre track for expresses to pass. The expresses were dropped and the third track with them. Toei’s 2024 count was 28,904 a day.

Finding Shin-egota on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Shin-egota

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

What is near Shin-egota Station?

Street level offers little to detain anyone: one park about 340 m from the exits, and otherwise the housing that fills the Nakano–Nerima border. The places the station serves are a walk away rather than at the door — a general hospital, Musashi University with its junior and senior high schools, the Nihon University College of Art, and Egota-no-Mori Park, the nearest substantial green space. Two exits handle all of it.

Frequently asked questions

The reading follows the Nakano district name, pronounced egota; before the address reform the area around the station was simply Egota. The Seibu Ikebukuro Line’s station, written with the same characters, is read Ekoda and is a different place, so the two names are not interchangeable.

Both, in effect. The address is in Ehara-cho, Nakano, but the station buildings sit on the boundary with Nerima; the line is marked on the platform, and the concourse distributes the public newsletters of both wards side by side.

Only the Oedo Line stops at Shin-egota Station. Its station number is E34.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Shin-egota is around 05:09 and the latest around 00:50, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Shin-egota to Shinjuku on Toei Subway lines is ¥220 with an IC card (¥220 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
