The Oedo Line ends here, at the westernmost station Toei operates, and it ends shallow: the platform lies 11.9 m below the surface, the least deep on a line better known for burrowing. E38 opened on 10 December 1991, when this was still Line 12, and was planned on a larger scale than it was built – two island platforms and four tracks for ten-car trains, cut back to a single island with two tracks before construction.

Beyond the platform the tracks split into two sidings that trains use to turn back, and those sidings carry on into the Takamatsu depot. The running lines themselves were built for a longer railway: the westbound track was constructed as far as a point where it dips beneath the depot approach on a 1-in-29 gradient, ready for an extension toward Oizumi that a 2016 transport council report recommended and that has not been built. Platform doors came into use on 8 December 2012. Toei counted 56,838 entries and exits a day in 2024, second among Oedo Line stations that meet no other railway.

Finding Hikarigaoka on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Hikarigaoka

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Frequently asked questions

The structure allows for it. Part of the westbound track was built beyond the platform, dipping under the depot approach, so the line could be extended toward Oizumi, and a transport council report in 2016 recommended carrying it on into Saitama. Nothing beyond the present terminus has been built.
Because the line reaches the surface of the Musashino terrace at this end. At 11.9 m from street level to platform it is the shallowest station on the Oedo Line, which elsewhere runs far deeper to pass beneath older tunnels; the measurement is Toei’s, taken at the centre of the station.
Only the Oedo Line stops at Hikarigaoka Station. Its station number is E38.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Hikarigaoka is around 05:00 and the latest around 00:17, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Hikarigaoka to Shinjuku on Toei Subway lines is ¥272 with an IC card (¥280 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
