Nishi-waseda is one of the stations that came with the Fukutoshin Line on 14 June 2008, when the line opened from Ikebukuro to Shibuya. F11 is an island platform on the third basement level, 14.6 km from Wakoshi at the far end, and it connects directly into Waseda University’s Nishi-Waseda campus — the reason a large share of the people through the gates are students.

Its oddity is a station it does not connect with. Takadanobaba, on the Tozai Line, is about 550 m away, but the two are not recognized as an interchange and no passage joins them, so a journey between those lines is made somewhere else. Fukutoshin Line trains themselves go a long way past the subway: through services run onto the Seibu Ikebukuro and Tobu Tojo lines at one end and the Tokyu Toyoko and Minatomirai lines at the other.

Finding Nishi-waseda on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Nishi-waseda

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Not as a transfer. Takadanobaba lies about 550 m away, but the operators do not treat the two stations as an interchange and there is no connecting passage, so you would be leaving one station and walking to another through the streets.

Directly. The Nishi-Waseda campus, which houses the university’s science and engineering faculties, is connected to the station, and Gakushuin Women’s College stands within a couple of hundred meters, which is why the gates are busiest at the start and end of classes.

Only the Fukutoshin Line stops at Nishi-waseda Station. Its station number is F11.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Nishi-waseda is around 05:11 and the latest around 00:20, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Tokyo Metro: the “1-route” (step-free street-gate-platform path by elevator, slope, stair lift or wheelchair escalator) is complete at all 180 stations; a separate list shows stations with an elevator-only 1-route. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Nishi-waseda to Tokyo on Tokyo Metro lines is ¥209 with an IC card (¥210 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
