Yushima Station (湯島)
C13 opened on 20 December 1969, the easternmost station in Bunkyo. It had been designated five years earlier in a Construction Ministry notice under the provisional name Tenjinshita, the foot of the Tenjin shrine, and the name it finally took belongs to the same hill. The platform is a single island.
Two pieces of operating detail set it apart. A stabling siding lies between the running lines at the Ayase end, reachable from either track and long enough for one train: a set is brought in empty the evening before and forms the first train of the morning towards Ayase, and in disruption trains can turn back here. The other is a connection that never happened. Yushima was laid out with a future link to what was then Line 12 in mind, but when that line was built as the Oedo Line it put its station at Ueno-okachimachi, a few hundred metres away; making the two an official transfer was considered later and dropped. In 2025 Yushima was used by 39,704 people on an average day.
Finding Yushima on the signs
Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.
Station numbers at Yushima
Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

What is near Yushima Station?
Yushima Tenmangu, the shrine students visit before examinations, is about 200 m from the exits and gives the station most of its traffic in late winter. The Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Garden is about 360 m away, 3331 Arts Chiyoda about 300 m and the Rakugo Kyokai about 140 m, with the Suzumoto Entertainment Hall about 380 m. Rensei Park, Kiridoshi Park and Shinhana Park fill the blocks between. Shinobazu Pond and Ueno Park are a short walk, and so is the Akihabara electronics district.

Frequently asked questions
The station was designed with a connection to the future Line 12 in mind, but when that line opened as the Oedo Line its platforms went in at Ueno-okachimachi, a few hundred metres from here. Linking the two as an official transfer was looked at afterwards and set aside, so a change between them is an ordinary walk between separate stations.
It is a stabling siding, laid between the two running lines at the Ayase end and reachable from both. One train is left there overnight and forms the first departure towards Ayase in the morning; the siding is also used to turn trains back when the timetable breaks down.
