Three railways are stacked on top of one another at Gotanda, and the subway is the youngest and the deepest. JR’s platforms opened on 15 October 1911; Tokyu put the Ikegami Line terminus on an elevated island platform above them on 17 June 1928; and Toei’s Asakusa Line island platform, A05, opened underground on 15 November 1968. The Tokyu station handles more passengers than any other on the Ikegami Line, so a good deal of the movement here is people coming down from one of the upper levels to reach the subway.

Toei counted 59,177 entries and exits a day at the subway station in 2024 – a fraction of the traffic passing through the complex as a whole. Trains from the platform run through beyond the subway onto Keisei, Keikyu, Hokuso and Shibayama tracks, which puts a sizeable slice of the southern suburbs and both airport railways within a single ride; airport access explains how that works. Togoshi and Takanawadai are the neighbouring stops.

Finding Gotanda on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Gotanda

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Vertically. The Tokyu Ikegami Line terminus is on an elevated island platform at the top, the JR Yamanote Line platforms are on the level below it, and the Toei Asakusa Line island platform is underground. Each opened decades apart, in 1911, 1928 and 1968, and each is run by a different company.
Beyond the subway in both directions. Services run through onto the Keisei, Keikyu, Hokuso and Shibayama networks, so trains from this platform can be signed for destinations well outside Tokyo. The airport access page covers which of those services are useful for reaching the two airports.
Only the Asakusa Line stops at Gotanda Station. Its station number is A05.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Gotanda is around 05:08 and the latest around 00:24, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Gotanda to Shinjuku on Toei Subway lines is ¥272 with an IC card (¥280 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
