A station here was written into the reconstruction plans for Line 5 in December 1946, two decades before it was built. The Tozai Line opened T12 on 14 September 1967; Toei’s Oedo Line added E15 on 12 December 2000, and the two are genuinely separate stations — Tokyo Metro’s lies in Monzen-nakacho 1-chome and Toei’s in 2-chome.

Preparing for that second line meant rebuilding the first. Work on the Tozai Line station started in March 1999 and finished in March 2001, widening the concourse and cutting a new connecting passage, at a cost of around ¥2.35 billion. A further stage in January 2016 widened platform 2 by 60 m and finished new elevators. Since 15 March 2014 passengers using an IC card have been able to pass through the other operator’s gate area when changing here, which takes some of the friction out of a transfer between two companies. Tozai Line trains carry on past the subway onto JR East and Toyo Rapid tracks.

Finding Monzen-nakacho on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Transfers and connections

  • Subway: transfer between Tozai Line and Oedo Line. The Tokyo Metro lines and the Toei Subway lines belong to different companies, so a trip that uses both costs more than one operator alone — see fares.

For the arrival of the Oedo Line. Work on the Tozai Line side ran from March 1999 to March 2001 and cost about ¥2.35 billion, widening the concourse and adding the transfer passage; in January 2016 platform 2 was widened by 60 m and new elevators were completed.
