Toei expected about 14,000 boardings a day here when the station opened on 12 December 2000. Then the towers went up. Harumi Island Triton Square opened in April 2001, high-rise flats followed across Kachidoki and Harumi, and within two years the daily count had passed sixty thousand; by 2024 it stood at 91,189 entries and exits, third on the Oedo Line and the highest of any Toei station serving a single line.

The station could not cope, and it was rebuilt around its passengers. A new platform was added on one side and the original island platform given over to the other direction, producing an asymmetric arrangement Toei had not used before; it came into service on 11 February 2019, and the work, which also joined up the two separated concourses and added entrances, was completed in June 2020 at a cost of about 16 billion yen. The number of ways in has grown from four at opening to eight. One of them runs under a weekday rule: between 7:00 and 10:00 on weekdays the A2a entrance takes passengers in only and A2b lets them out only, with both its escalators running upward.

Finding Kachidoki on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Kachidoki

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

What is near Kachidoki Station?

Kachidoki Bridge over the Sumida gave the station its name, and the Kachidoki-Toyoumi historical materials exhibition hall, about 80 m from an exit, explains how the bascule span used to open. Towers dominate the rest: Kachidoki View Tower around 80 m away, with The Tokyo Towers, Park Tower Kachidoki and the HARUMI FLAG blocks further out, and Harumi Island Triton Square a few minutes along Kiyosumi-dori. Riverside walks line the Sumida and the Asashio canal, and Tsukishima Second Elementary School is roughly 170 m from the gates.

Frequently asked questions

Because its traffic grew far beyond what the design allowed. Planned for roughly 14,000 boardings a day, it was handling several times that within a few years of opening as Harumi and Kachidoki filled with towers. Separate platforms for each direction came into use on 11 February 2019 and the wider concourse was finished in June 2020.
They do, on weekdays. From 7:00 to 10:00 on weekdays the A2a entrance is for entering the station only and A2b for leaving it, and both of A2b’s escalators run upward during those hours. A2b was added in 2003 specifically to relieve the crowding at the original entrance.
Only the Oedo Line stops at Kachidoki Station. Its station number is E17.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Kachidoki is around 05:06 and the latest around 00:38, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Toei: every station has elevators and a street-gate-platform “1-route” is secured. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
