The Institute for Nature Study is the reason this station was bored rather than dug. Meguro-dori above is narrow and lined with houses and shops, and residents feared for the groundwater feeding the Institute’s woods, so a cut-and-cover plan was dropped in favour of a detachable three-barrel slurry shield — a world first, driven as one machine and then opened out to carve the platform cavern. The result is two side platforms on the fourth basement level, 28.3 m down to the rails, the third-deepest on the Namboku Line.

N02 and I02 opened on 26 September 2000, and both companies’ trains use the same tracks here, part of the shared section towards Meguro. The walls are finished in curved white crystallized glass with cross-vault motifs overhead, and a public artwork, Shirokane Shunju, hangs inside the gates. One warning for late travelers: exit 1 closes at 23:00 and reopens at 06:00.

Finding Shirokanedai on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Shirokanedai

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Departure times come from the operators’ own GTFS timetables (ODPT GTFS Toei-Train-GTFS (version 20261009, valid 2026-03-14..2027-03-12) + TokyoMetro-Train-GTFS (version 20261008, valid 2026-09-19..2027-03-12)). Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Transfers and connections

  • Subway: transfer between Namboku Line and Mita Line. The Tokyo Metro lines and the Toei Subway lines belong to different companies, so a trip that uses both costs more than one operator alone — see fares.

Frequently asked questions

No. Exit 1, on the Gaien-nishi-dori side, closes at 23:00 and reopens at 06:00; during those hours exit 2, towards Hiyoshizaka and Happo-en, is the only way in or out. The two exits are independent of each other, so it is worth knowing which one you need before the last trains.

Shirokanedai, with no voicing in the middle — not Shiroganedai, though it is often said that way. The name comes from the district above the station, which was called Shiba-Shirokanedaimachi before Tokyo’s address reform of 1969.

Shirokanedai Station is served by the Namboku Line and Mita Line. Its station numbers are N02, I02 — one per line, and that is what the platform signs, the maps and the announcements use.
No. Shirokanedai is served by both Tokyo Metro and Toei, which are separate companies with separate fares. If your trip uses one line from each, you pay both fares minus the ¥70 connecting discount. Transfer through the marked transfer gates so the discount is applied. How the two-operator fare works.

Tokyo Metro: the “1-route” (step-free street-gate-platform path by elevator, slope, stair lift or wheelchair escalator) is complete at all 180 stations; a separate list shows stations with an elevator-only 1-route.
