Minami-asagaya Station (南阿佐ケ谷)
For eleven weeks Minami-asagaya was the end of the line. It opened on 1 November 1961 as the terminus of what was then called the Ogikubo Line, and lost that status on 23 January 1962 when the tracks were pushed on to Ogikubo; the Ogikubo Line itself became part of the Marunouchi Line under that name on 1 April 1972.
M02 lies directly under the Ome-kaido, and the shape of that road shows in the station. The two side platforms are on the first basement level, each with its own ticket gates and its own street exit, numbered 1 and 2, and the only link between them is a passage inside the gates that involves steps. The platforms are narrow and the gates few, so the crowding is lopsided: the Ikebukuro-direction side fills up in the morning and the Ogikubo-direction side in the evening. Choosing the correct entrance before going down is worth a moment at street level.
Finding Minami-asagaya on the signs
Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.
Station numbers at Minami-asagaya
Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Frequently asked questions
The two side platforms sit under a road that is too narrow for a shared concourse, so each has its own ticket gates and its own street exit — exit 1 for platform 1, exit 2 for platform 2. They are linked inside the gates, but the connection involves stairs, so it is easier to pick the right side above ground.
Yes, briefly. When it opened on 1 November 1961 it was the end of the Ogikubo Line, and it stayed so until the extension to Ogikubo opened on 23 January 1962. The Ogikubo Line was absorbed into the Marunouchi Line name in 1972.
