Ikebukuro is the end of the Marunouchi Line, M25, which opened here on 20 January 1954 as the first stretch of that line; the Yurakucho Line followed on 30 October 1974 and the Fukutoshin Line on 14 June 2008. The subway lines sit at different depths and angles – Marunouchi and Yurakucho two levels down running east to west, Fukutoshin four levels down along Meiji-dori – and Tokyo Metro’s own underground shopping street, Echika, threads between them.

The whole complex is also the Tokyo terminal of the Seibu Ikebukuro Line and the Tobu Tojo Line, with a department store attached to each, and a naming quirk that catches everybody: Seibu is written with the character for west but its platforms are on the east side, while Tobu, written with the character for east, is on the west. With 529,947 entries and exits a day in the 2025 survey, this is the busiest station Tokyo Metro operates. Fukutoshin Line trains run south to Shibuya and on through to Yokohama.

Finding Ikebukuro on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Ikebukuro

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the day, and on the line. On weekdays S-Train services pass this station on the Yurakucho Line without stopping. On Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays they call at the Fukutoshin Line platforms instead, and then only to let passengers off.
It looks that way because of their names. Seibu is written with the character meaning west, but its terminal platforms are on the eastern side of the complex; Tobu is written with the character meaning east, and its platforms are on the western side. Each company also runs the department store beside its own platforms.
Ikebukuro Station is served by the Marunouchi Line, Yurakucho Line, and Fukutoshin Line. Its station numbers are M25, Y09, F09 — one per line, and that is what the platform signs, the maps and the announcements use.
On weekdays the earliest departure from Ikebukuro is around 05:00 and the latest around 00:20, depending on the line and the direction. Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays follow the other published timetable; the table above gives both for every line and direction.
According to the operators’ own accessibility pages there is a step-free route from the street through the gates to the platform. Tokyo Metro: the “1-route” (step-free street-gate-platform path by elevator, slope, stair lift or wheelchair escalator) is complete at all 180 stations; a separate list shows stations with an elevator-only 1-route. Lift locations and opening hours are on the operator page linked in the accessibility section above.
A single adult fare from Ikebukuro to Tokyo on Tokyo Metro lines is ¥209 with an IC card (¥210 with a paper ticket). Tokyo charges by distance, so the fare depends on how far you go and on which company’s lines you use — the full tables are on the fares page.
