Naka-okachimachi Station (仲御徒町)
Naka-okachimachi was in the Hibiya Line’s opening batch on 28 March 1961, and at first only half of it worked: trains used platform 1 and reversed over a crossover beyond the station, which survives as an emergency connection. The island platform, H17, lies on the second basement level under Showa-dori. The name outlived its subject — Naka-okachimachi was a district name that disappeared in the address reform of 1964, and the station is now in Ueno 5-chome.
Its later history is one of passages. Work begun in March 1994 widened the concourse and built new transfer routes at a cost of about ¥6.2 billion; from 12 December 2000 the station was linked for transfer purposes with Ueno-okachimachi on the Oedo Line and Ueno-hirokoji on the Ginza Line, and a further passage reached Keisei Ueno on 16 March 2009. Exit 5 and a central ticket gate with an elevator opened on 28 November 2020. Illustrations on the platform wall make this the second such station on the Hibiya Line, after Akihabara.
Finding Naka-okachimachi on the signs
Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.
Station numbers at Naka-okachimachi
Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Ueno-hirokoji on the Ginza Line and Ueno-okachimachi on the Oedo Line, both linked for transfer purposes since 12 December 2000, and Keisei Ueno by way of the passage opened on 16 March 2009. The walking times in the data block above are our estimates rather than official ones.
From a district of the same name that covered the southeast of today’s Ueno and was abolished in the address reform of 1964. The station kept the old name while its address became Ueno 5-chome, which is why it no longer matches anything on a modern map.
