Minowa belongs to the first day of the Hibiya Line, 28 March 1961, when the line consisted of five stations between Naka-okachimachi and Minami-senju. It is the northernmost station in Taito ward, and its two side platforms have a quirk of climate: the tunnel mouth is only 253 m from the center of the station, so in winter the platform is about as cold as the street.

The exits need care. Entrances 1a and 1b lead only to the platform for Naka-meguro-direction trains and entrance 2 only to the platform for Kita-senju-direction trains; to switch sides you either walk through to the gate at exit 3 inside the station or use the footbridge above the street. The station’s number changed as well: it became H20 when Toranomon-hills opened on 6 June 2020 and the line’s codes were shifted to make room. In the transport ministry’s 2015 data, the run from Minowa toward Iriya was among the most crowded in Tokyo.

Finding Minowa on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Minowa

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

Japan publishes two subway timetables: 平日 weekdays and 土休日 Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays. There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Yes, on foot. Minowabashi, the end of Toei’s surviving streetcar line, lies about five minutes’ walk from the subway exits. It is a separate operator and a separate stop, not a transfer inside the station, so you pay the tram fare on boarding.
