Toei owns and runs every part of this station, yet it is also the northern end of the Keikyu Main Line, the furthest north Keikyu reaches. The two companies share two island platforms and four tracks, deliberately so, because most Asakusa Line trains switch to Keikyu metals here and passengers for Gotanda, Nishi-magome and the southern end of the Asakusa Line have to change at A07. Only Toei’s number exists: when Keikyu numbered its stations in 2010, Sengakuji was left out of the scheme.

The station opened on 21 June 1968 as the terminus of Line 1 from Daimon, and became an intermediate stop on 15 November the same year when the line was extended. Keikyu’s link from Shinagawa opened on the same June day and through running began at once. Since 14 March 2020 it has also handled transfers to JR at Takanawa Gateway. Toei’s 2024 count was 209,882 passengers a day.

Finding Sengakuji on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Sengakuji

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.

Frequently asked questions

Because the line effectively divides here. Most Asakusa Line services continue onto the Keikyu Main Line beyond Sengakuji, so trains for Gotanda and Nishi-magome are a separate working and many passengers swap trains at this station. The shared platforms were laid out to make that change quick.

Yes. In 1993 Sengaku-ji sued the metropolitan government, arguing that the station name caused it trouble, including misdirected telephone calls. The district court dismissed the claim in 1994, the high court rejected the appeal, and the case ended with the temple’s defeat in 1997.
