Komagome Station (駒込)
Komagome had railway service for 81 years before the subway arrived. The Yamanote Line station dates from 15 November 1910, lost its building to an air raid on 13 April 1945 and was rebuilt afterward; the Namboku Line platform, N14, opened on 29 November 1991 as the terminus of what was then a very short line. That lasted until 26 March 1996, when the section to Yotsuya opened and Komagome turned into an intermediate stop.
Both halves of the station have the same shape, one island platform and two tracks, Tokyo Metro’s below ground and JR East’s at the surface. In 2000 the JR station was chosen for the Kanto region’s station-selection list, cited for the azaleas that line the Yamanote tracks in season. Namboku Line trains run through beyond the subway onto Saitama Railway metals in one direction and onto Tokyu and Sotetsu tracks in the other, so this quiet corner of Toshima has direct trains to three other operators’ networks; Hon-komagome and Nishigahara are the stations either side.
Finding Komagome on the signs
Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.
Station numbers at Komagome
Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.
