The station is named after a gate of Edo Castle that no longer stands, and for its first six years it was the end of the line that bears the same name: the Hanzomon Line was extended here from Nagatacho on 9 December 1982, and only on 26 January 1989, when the tunnel reached Mitsukoshimae, did Z05 become an intermediate stop. The turnback siding from those days is still there, and one morning train from Shibuya still uses it.

Hanzomon is the only station on its line that meets no other railway, though Kojimachi on the Yurakucho Line is a few minutes away on foot. Its decoration is drawn from the National Theatre nearby: the panels around the platform name boards use the green, persimmon and black of the theatre’s traditional striped curtain, a relief of the kabuki lion dance faces passengers inside the gates, and since 13 September 2018 the departure melodies have been arrangements of kabuki and bunraku music made under the supervision of the Japan Arts Council. On 11 August 2026 asbestos was found in fabric in the platform ventilation plant and the station was closed from the first train while it was cleaned. The 2025 survey counted 76,148 entries and exits a day.

Finding Hanzomon on the signs

Every line gives the station its own letter-and-number code. You never have to read the Japanese name to find the right platform.

Station numbers at Hanzomon

Tokyo signposts every platform, exit and train door with a letter and a two-digit number. Matching the number is faster than reading the name — and it is what you will see on the map, in announcements and on the platform edge.

There is no separate Sunday timetable, and the December 30 – January 3 period runs the holiday timetable.
